What does it mean to be an American? Beyond living here, is 'American' dependent on each person's concept of what 'America' means? What if you don't fit into another person's definition of what it means to be 'American'? Do you give up certain 'inalienable rights' in that person's eyes? If so, where do you go to regain those rights? How do you appeal a mostly unspoken judgment that you are less than fully American, and thus less than fully human?
This project was inspired, in part, by a story on PBS that said one of the things dividing Americans is that we can't even decide on a definition of what it means to be American. So here are some photographs of some Americans. Maybe it will help.
